Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in Agriculture

 

University of Wisconsin Partners for Livestock EMS website.  This is a multi-year project ending September, 2005 that examined the application of EMS concepts to dairy, beef and poultry farms in nine states. The University of Wisconsin Madison agricultural EMS website includes a newsletter you can subscribe to as well.

Several pilot teams within the Partners project developed websites:

     University of Georgia EMS for Poultry Producers

     Virginia Poultry EMS website

     University of Wisconsin Dairy EMS website.

     Iowa State University EMS for Beef Feedlots

 

The United Egg Producers and the EPA worked together on Project XL to examine the application of EMS’s to poultry operations.

 

North Carolina pork producers, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, and North Carolina State University worked with several North Carolina swine producers to develop ISO 14001 EMS processes. 

 

Integrated Farm and Livestock Management Demonstration Program.

 

Utah State University is working with CAFO’s within their state to implement EMS’s.

 

Environmental Management Systems in General

 

The Multi-State Working Group on EMS’s is a consortium of organizations and businesses from the private and public sectors. 

 

National Database on Environmental Management Systems

 

The PEER Center or Public Entity Environmental Management System Resource Center aids local, county and state governments in implementing EMS’s.

The American National Standards Institute has information on accreditation programs.

Environmental Protection Agency EMS Information including the agency’s position statement on EMS’s.

The EPA sponsors an incentive program called Performance Track.
